Background
The Pakistan Society of Pediatric Oncology (PSPO) was established in 2009 with initial leadership of Dr Shamvil Ashraf, Dr Zehra Fadoo, Dr Asim Belgaumi, Dr Mary Taj and other members. It was registered on the 26th October 2009 under the Societies Registration Act 1860 with the Provincial Assistant Registrar as a not for profit organization. The members include qualified pediatric oncologists, radiation oncologists, residents, fellows, technicians, nursing staff and research personals working in the field of Pediatric Oncology.
PSPO has an organizational committee called “Board of Directors” and the head office is located in the center of Karachi.

Society Mission
- Promote awareness about childhood cancers in medical community & community at large.
- Create opportunities for training of professionals in the field of Pediatric Oncology.
- Develop treatment & diagnostic standards for childhood cancer in Pakistan.
- Develop robust research facilities in Pakistan in the field of childhood cancers.
- Establish practice for palliative care of children at par with international standards.
- Set up charity fund for the treatment of children with cancer who cannot afford medical treatment.
Society Objectives:
- To promote awareness about childhood cancer within the medical field and in the general public.
- To develop treatment and diagnostic standards for childhood cancer in Pakistan.
- To create opportunities for training of professionals in the field of pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT.
- To assist educational institutions in promoting professional technical education in the field of childhood cancer and blood diseases in particular and common medical care in general.
- To promote and conduct research and disseminate research results on pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT at national and international pediatric/pediatric hematology oncology forums.
- To foster the practice of pediatric palliative care at par with international standards.
- To advocate for families and children affected with cancer.
- To publish books, magazines, and journals on the subject of childhood cancer.
- To grant academic scholarships, stipends, and other financial support to the Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, BMT fellows, and active POSPO members, to support their education in the various clinical fields associated with the care of children with cancer
