What is alendronate?
Alendronate is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis. Tablets are taken by mouth and are available in 5 mg, 10 mg, 35 mg, 40 mg, and 70 mg strengths.
If you miss a dose
Follow your doctor's instructions. In general, if you take alendronate once a week and forget your dose, take it the morning after you remember. Do not take two tablets on the same day.
Possible side effects
- Stomach pain or heartburn
- Muscle, bone, or joint pain
- Headache
- Trouble swallowing
- Nausea, constipation, or gas
Tips for patients and families
- Take only with plain water—no juice, coffee, or milk.
- Report severe muscle, joint, or bone pain to your doctor.
- Do not chew or suck the tablet; swallow whole.
- Inform your dentist that you are taking alendronate.
