What is citalopram?
Citalopram (Celexa®) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.
Citalopram at home
- It may take several weeks to see the full effect of this medicine; contact your provider if symptoms worsen or do not improve.
- Take with or without food; take with food if stomach upset occurs.
- Swallow tablets or capsules whole unless instructed otherwise.
- Measure liquid doses with the provided device.
- If a dose is missed and it is near the next dose, skip it. Do not take two doses at the same time.
- Store at room temperature in a dry place.
- Do not use the medicine past the expiration date.
- Follow instructions for safe handling, storage, and disposal.

- Weight gain
- Nausea
- Feeling tired or weak
- Dry mouth
- Sleep problems
- Dizziness
- Increased sweating
- Constipation
- Sexual dysfunction
- Fertility problems
- Not all patients who take citalopram will have these side effects. Common side effects are in bold, but there may be others. Report any symptoms or side effects to your health care provider or pharmacist.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions and instructions with your health care provider or pharmacist.
- Watch for mood or mental health changes such as worsening depression, anxiety, agitation, irritability, panic attacks, or trouble sleeping.
- Seek medical help right away for suicidal thoughts, actions, or signs of self-harm.
- Do not stop taking citalopram without talking to a health care provider.
- This medicine may cause drowsiness or dizziness; avoid dangerous activities until you know how it affects you.
- Bruising or bleeding may occur more easily and wounds may heal more slowly; use soft toothbrushes, electric razors, and avoid injury-prone activities.
- Citalopram may affect sexual interest or performance; discuss concerns with the care team.
- Tell the care team if the patient is sexually active, pregnant, or breastfeeding.
