What is erythropoietin?
Erythropoietin stimulates red blood cell production to treat anemia. It is a colorless liquid delivered by subcutaneous injection or IV (for chronic renal patients). Vials are available in strengths of 2,000, 4,000, 10,000, 20,000, and 40,000 units/mL.
Possible side effects
- Injection-site pain, bruising, swelling
- High blood pressure
- Clots in central lines
- Rash
- Muscle aches or bone pain
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Symptoms of allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Expect routine blood pressure checks during therapy.
- Refrigerate vials (do not freeze) and allow them to reach room temperature about an hour before dosing.
- Do not shake the vial.
- Ask about using acetaminophen for muscle or bone pain.
