What is Factor VIII (Human) and von Willebrand Factor?
Human Factor VIII with von Willebrand factor replenishes clotting factors to manage bleeding disorders. It is supplied as a powder to be mixed with sterile water and given by IV.
Possible side effects
- Allergic reactions (itching, hives, swelling, chest tightness, trouble breathing)
- Fever or chills
- Lightheadedness or fainting
- Yellowing skin or eyes
- Drowsiness or fatigue
- Headache
- Nausea or mild stomach pain
- Pain, itching, swelling, burning, or lumps at injection site
- Symptoms of allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in throat, swelling of face or neck
- Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Store in the refrigerator or at room temperature for up to 6 months (record the date if kept at room temperature); do not freeze.
- Do not use past the expiration date.
- Home infusion may be taught; ensure you understand all instructions before self-administration.
- Have another trained person available if possible; contact the care team for missed dose guidance.
- Warm powder and sterile water to room temperature before mixing; use within 3 hours of reconstitution.
- Use new needles/syringes for each dose and dispose of sharps safely.
- Follow care team directions for disposing of leftover medicine and supplies.
