What is promethazine?

Promethazine is an antiemetic used to prevent or treat nausea and vomiting. It is available in multiple dosage forms including tablets, syrup, suppositories, and injections.

Promethazine at home

  • Take tablets or syrup with food or milk if stomach upset occurs.
  • Insert suppositories rectally after removing the wrapper; do not take by mouth.
  • Store medicines properly and keep out of reach of children.
  • Use only as directed by the care team.

Possible side effects

  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth or throat
  • Severe reactions include breathing difficulty, heart rhythm changes, rash or hives, convulsions, or uncontrolled movements
  • Allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in throat, swelling of face or neck)
  • Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.

Tips for patients and families

  • Discuss all instructions with the doctor or pharmacist.
  • Stop the medicine and seek medical help if severe side effects occur.
  • Do not take promethazine if allergic to related medicines such as prochlorperazine, chlorpromazine, or thioridazine.
  • Use caution with activities requiring alertness because of drowsiness.
  • Store tablets and syrup at room temperature away from light and moisture.
  • Store suppositories in the refrigerator and use proper insertion techniques.
