What is cefaclor?
Cefaclor is used to prevent or treat infections and is available as a 250 mg capsule and a strawberry flavored liquid suspension, both taken by mouth.
Possible side effects
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Rash
- Loss of appetite
- Headache
- Stomach pain
- Heartburn
- Allergic reaction with symptoms such as rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, muscle aches, irritability, or joint pain
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, or swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients who take cefaclor will experience these side effects. Common side effects are in bold, but there may be others. Please report all suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions and instructions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to other cephalosporin or penicillin antibiotics.
- Report allergy symptoms or severe or watery diarrhea to your doctor right away.
- Finish all doses as prescribed even if you feel better and do not stop without medical advice.
- Do not take cefaclor with probenecid unless your doctor approves.
- Cefaclor may cause a false-positive urine glucose test.
