What is emtricitabine?

Emtricitabine is an NRTI used to treat HIV infection. It slows disease progression but does not cure HIV. It is available as a 200 mg capsule and an oral solution.

Emtricitabine at home

  • Take once daily as prescribed.
  • May be taken with or without food; taking after a meal may reduce stomach upset.
  • Follow instructions for measuring the oral solution if used.

Possible side effects

  • Rash
  • Feeling more tired than usual
  • Low blood counts
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Darker skin in certain areas or all over
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
  • Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.

Tips for patients and families

  • Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Store capsules and solution at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
  • Attend clinic visits for blood tests to monitor side effects such as low blood counts.
