What is enoxaparin?
Enoxaparin is a blood thinner (anticoagulant) used to treat or prevent blood clots. It is provided in prefilled syringes (30–150 mg) or vials for smaller doses, given as a subcutaneous injection.
Possible side effects
- Injection-site irritation, pain, bruising, swelling, redness
- Easy bruising or bleeding (e.g., when brushing teeth)
- Skin rash or itching
- Increased menstrual bleeding
- Nausea or diarrhea
- Seek immediate care for signs of allergy (wheezing, shortness of breath, swelling), excessive bleeding, blood in urine or stool, coughing up blood, severe stomach pain, chest pain, dizziness, swelling in limbs, or vision problems
- Symptoms of allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Always confirm syringe or vial strength; contact the clinic if the strength changes unexpectedly.
- Blood tests (anti-Xa levels) must be drawn 4–6 hours after dosing via a peripheral stick.
- Inform surgeons or dentists about enoxaparin before procedures.
- Avoid medicines that increase bleeding risk (warfarin, aspirin, NSAIDs) unless approved by your doctor.
- Store prefilled syringes and unopened vials at room temperature or in the refrigerator; discard opened vials after 28 days and do not freeze.
- Follow instructions for subcutaneous injections, dose preparation, and safe sharps disposal.
- Tell the care team immediately about serious injuries.
