What is Factor IX concentrate?
Factor IX concentrate replaces clotting factor IX to manage bleeding disorders. It comes as a powder to be mixed with sterile water and given by IV.
Possible side effects
- Allergic reactions (itching, hives, swelling, tightness in throat, trouble breathing)
- Fever or chills
- Bluish skin coloration
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Cough or taste changes
- Headache
- Diarrhea, vomiting, or nausea
- Dizziness
- Lower leg pain
- Unusual bleeding, bruising, or weakness
- Injection-site redness, pain, swelling, itching, rash
- Numbness or weakness in limbs or one side of the body
- Symptoms of allergic reaction also include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in throat, swelling of face or neck
- Not all patients will experience these side effects. Report any symptoms to the care team.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- Store in the refrigerator; do not freeze. May be kept at room temperature for up to 6 months (record the date).
- Do not use past the expiration date.
- Ensure you understand home infusion instructions before self-administration.
- Have another trained person available; contact the care team for missed dose guidance.
- Warm powder and diluent to room temperature before mixing; use within 3 hours of reconstitution.
- Use new needles/syringes each time and dispose of sharps safely.
- Consult the care team about disposal of leftover medicine and supplies.
