What is meropenem?
Meropenem is a medicine used to treat infections. Meropenem is available as a clear to yellow liquid that is given into a vein (IV).
Possible side effects
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Rash
- Itching
- Low blood pressure
- Headache
- Seizures
- Changes in kidney or liver function tests
- Swelling at the injection site
- Shortness of breath
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients who take meropenem will experience these side effects. Common side effects are bolded, but there may be others. Please report all suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.
Tips for patients and families
- Be sure to discuss all questions and instructions with your doctor or pharmacist.
- If you have decreased kidney function, tell your doctor before you receive meropenem.
- If you are an outpatient receiving meropenem through a portable pump: Finish all doses of meropenem as instructed by your doctor, even if you think your condition has improved, Store meropenem in the refrigerator or on ice, Place one (1) dose of meropenem at room temperature about one (1) hour before the dose is received., Meropenem in a portable pump is only good for 5 days; you will receive a new supply every 5 days.
- Meropenem may cause a false-positive urine test result when checking your urine for sugar (glucose) levels.
