What is pazopanib?
Pazopanib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor that blocks cell signals and tumor blood vessel growth. Patients have regular labs and monitoring for blood pressure and heart function.
Pazopanib at home
- Take at the same time each day on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after food).
- Swallow tablets whole; do not cut, crush, or chew.
- Caregivers should wear gloves when handling tablets.
- Store at room temperature.
- If a dose is missed and it is within 12 hours of the next dose, skip it. Do not give two doses at the same time.
- Do not use past the expiration date.
Possible side effects
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue or weakness
- High blood pressure
- Nausea or vomiting
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Headache
- Liver problems
- Hand-foot syndrome (tingling, redness, flaking skin)
- Changes in taste
- Changes in hair, skin, or nails
- Abdominal pain
- Joint, muscle, or bone pain
- Mouth sores
- Sleep problems
- Low blood counts with increased infection, bleeding, anemia, or fatigue risk
- Not all patients have these effects. Report all suspected side effects.
Tips for families
- Discuss all questions with the doctor or pharmacist.
- Follow care team recommendations to manage diarrhea and nausea.
- Drink plenty of fluids as directed.
- Avoid grapefruit or Seville orange products.
- Do not take antacids within 2 hours before or after pazopanib unless recommended.
- Use birth control during treatment and for 2 weeks after completion.
- Inform the care team if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Follow instructions for safe handling and disposal.
