What is potassium?
Potassium is an essential mineral. Levels are checked with blood tests, and supplementation or removal is managed based on laboratory findings.
Possible side effects
- Muscle weakness
- Changes in heart rhythm
- Symptoms of allergic reaction include rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report any symptoms.
Tips for patients and families
- Discuss all questions with the doctor or pharmacist.
- Micro-K® capsules can be opened and sprinkled on food; K-Dur® tablets should not be crushed but may be dissolved in 5 mL of water.
- Neutra Phos® packets must be dissolved in at least 30 mL of liquid.
- Notify the care team if symptoms of hypokalemia occur.
