What is sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim?

Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim is a combination antibiotic that kills bacteria and prevents infections in immunocompromised patients. IV administration requires monitoring for extravasation.

Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim at home

  • Take with or without food; give with food if stomach upset occurs.
  • Measure liquid doses with the provided device.
  • Give missed doses as soon as possible unless near the next dose; do not double.
  • Store at room temperature (follow pharmacy guidance for light protection).
  • Complete the entire prescribed course.

Possible side effects

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rash
  • Sun sensitivity
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Low blood counts
  • Allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in throat, swelling of face or neck)
  • Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms.

Tips for patients and families

  • Discuss instructions with the care team.
  • Take all doses exactly as prescribed; do not skip doses.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent kidney problems.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Protect skin from the sun.
  • Patients with a sulfa allergy may not tolerate this medicine; inform the care team before starting.
  • Use birth control and inform the care team if pregnant or breastfeeding.
