What is tisagenlecleucel?
Tisagenlecleucel is a CAR T-cell therapy that engineers a patient’s T cells to target cancer cells. Patients are monitored closely for cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and neurologic effects.
Possible long-term effects
- Chronic infections
- Second cancers
Possible side effects
- Cytokine release syndrome (fever, chills, low blood pressure, organ dysfunction)
- Neurologic effects (headache, seizures, confusion, tremors, hallucinations, slurred speech, dizziness)
- Low blood counts
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea
- Fatigue or weakness
- Rash
- Abdominal or back pain
- Low potassium
- Swelling of face or legs
- Not all patients experience these effects. Report all symptoms immediately.
Tips for families
- Carry the Patient Wallet Card at all times.
- Remain within 2 hours of the treating hospital for at least 4 weeks after infusion unless otherwise directed.
- Avoid driving or hazardous activities for at least 8 weeks.
- Diphenhydramine, acetaminophen, or tocilizumab may be used to manage reactions.
- Avoid live vaccines before and after therapy as directed.
- Use birth control during treatment and inform the doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Caregivers should protect themselves from drug-laden sweat and fluids.
